The celebrants are left behind for a moment to focus and fulfill other details that impact and enrich the experience of the evening's events.

Sweeps of wind rip through the frame to join the energy of the midnight celebration. A top contender for the most energetic frame in the series.

Debris serves the intensity as it is implied the wind is of such force that it has stripped the branches of the last remnants of the season or lifted it from the ground to which it had fallen before.

Branches are kept simple; brevity is again the best choice when it comes to the scope and scale the viewer is asked to participate in. Only what's impressionable is conveyed in Hoopes' watercolors. All other details (more intricate tree branches, refined shapes of the leaves) would simply get in the way. The brevity serves the blur of action; the mind of the viewer engages with whichever details it needs.

The arc of the wind lines follows the sweeping strings throughout the Danse, effectively rollercoastering through the frame.

A supernatural lighter glow to the rear and a convergence of the wind lines toward the upper right serve to provide depth for the wind to travel in as it rips down and past and then through and beyond the branches that whistle and comb it.

The kinetic visual of this frame served as an appropriate backdrop for the visual editor credit at the beginning of the piece in frame 4. Sweeping images syncing with soaring music provide a challenge for any editor, indeed. That no music played during the credit enable the action of this imagery to spark attention in the viewer; a baton tap or house lights down of a visual overture of imagery to come.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-72421595782197111412012-04-17T06:45:00.000-07:002012-04-17T07:16:53.259-07:00Frame 20

The artwork here is also a repeat of imagery that was last seen in frame 11. It will not be seen again.

Where prior the fiddler was leading a drowsy procession out of it's slumber, it is now leading it through the rigors and passion of a dance in full force.

All elements remain strong and enduring on this revisit to impact again or be found for the first time. Fat stars cottonball above the misty yard. Bold, simple silhouettes build an effective vignette. The blazing clock face is roughly the same size as the bright stars opposite creating a resonance of dislocation and flow. Size brings depth with the diminishing poses of the dancers and clock tower low on the horizon. Edges are soft and blurred evoking motion and dreamstate illusion: something which sets this artwork of the Danse apart from its peers so effectively and memorably.

This is a thematically encompassing image that serves to represent the event. A spectral figure leads dancing spirits through a misted graveyard deep in the night. That many of the strong elements of Hoopes' take on the vision are present in the execution likewise serves as tribute to the overall accomplishment of the illustrator.
in frame 26 and 33.

It's repetition creates a rhythmic centerpiece to reflect at. Before we had only seen one spirit arise; since there's been a spectral chorus line and a dynamic double-duet. Despite the rise in intensity in the celebration evoked about it, the central figure remains the same: focused on his instrument and in his delivery.

No effort is made to represent the central spectre from a different angle or in a different light in these returns. Was it a time constraint on the illustrator's part? Was it a decision by the visual editor to extend the story using a limited amount of imagery?

Regardless, such a convention serves to bond the imagery and impressions introduced before. It is the fiddler that resurrects and enables all that goes on; the gravity around which all orbit. Returning to him in the same angle and poise works to strengthen that impression. Always the fiddler. Always consistently dedicated.

Extreme poses conclude the three-frame series. In the foreground are flourishes in the angle of the wrist, open jaw and twisted foot of the follow and the head angle and palms of his flyer. In the background, the bent knee of the follow and extreme arched spine and poise of the head of the flyer work for a portrait of bounding apogee.

Shading is used to give the imagery depth; not only to separate the foreground and background couples from each other, but also within the partners' proximity to each other. In the front, the head and arms of the flyer dip into a shadow behind her body; her follow's lower body rests deeper than his upper. To the rear, the flyer is deeper into the space above her follow giving recess into the mists which she is swung.

Dashes of white give a sense of glistening and wetness.

Blurred arcs in the lower part of the composition complement the kinetic depths and heights of the dancers. The arcs work to complement and combine their action evoking mist that swirls and wraps about, dipping and flipping with the action as it moves through and into the frame.

The framing tombstones from the prior frames are gone - either as a result of the couples moving to different parts of the grounds or the framing stones themselves having been swept away to other planes of existence in the night's dewy air. Indeed, in looking back at the forms of the tombstones and branches at the edges of the illustrations the three frame sequence may very well have been four frames starting at frame 15:

In the 2nd of what might be considered a sequence of three illustrations, the couple in frame 16 continue their movement together. Our illustrator is focusing on the intimacy of the dance and the yearning opportunity to once again share each others' company. This rapor is supported by the particular burlesque flavor of the music during these measures.

Here their gait and posture suggest an enchufla - where they are reversing their initial introductory facings to prepare for what's to follow. There's an almost jazz "hip swinging" implied in their bended knees, bending spines and splayed arms and fingers. But perhaps more appropriately it's merely an encircling, creeping bow to stay more reverent and gracefully inline with the composition.

To the rear we see entering (jumping?) the form of another reveler whose outstretched arms inform us his or her partner lies just off frame right.

The angles of tombstones frame the composition to the left and right. Their forms are slightly out of scale in reference to the figures if the stones are as close as they are implied in the perspective. But then again, the nature of the ethereal happenings and chosen medium to portray them allow such shiftings to be easily forgiven and embraced.
Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-45141137116880550332011-03-10T14:00:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:50:02.658-07:00Frame 16

Were these two former partners in life as well?

A courteous kiss of a hand to welcome the other back to the celebration they've shared before or are finding each other for the first time after their lives prior, or indeed taking advantage of what was forbidden before then ...

... and a first suggestion by Hoopes of reliving past emotions beyond just a Dionysian celebration by the spirits. In this retouch a brighter cascade of color spills from the bowing form which serves as an flirtatious aura of intent.

Further example of Hoopes' knowledge of form and anatomy in the proportions and representations of the hipbones and legs of these two.

The watercolor mist still so effective in connecting and obscuring that which goes on in the foreground with that in the back in the distance it so subtly implies.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-37363798133307047662011-03-08T13:02:00.000-08:002011-09-06T17:04:00.711-07:00Frame 15

In a countering angle to the prior frame, another line of spirits canters through the densest fog we've seen so far. The stars are bright enough to burn through to continue to make their presence known, however, providing depth and distance to the world beyond. Dense, yes. Pea soup, not so much.

The geometry of the tree to the left seems slightly skewed with the skull of the closest spirit in front of its leaved branch and the knee apparently behind the trunk as illustrated. That can again be accepted once again due to the ever shifting nature of the reality about.

"-R-I-P-" is clearly read on the gravestone in the foreground and not much effort is given to distinguish the grave it marks from the others in the faded grounds behind it. Rows upon rows of now-empty beds.

Wind and flurry is suggested by the spotches blowing off the grave towards frame right, following the motion of the branch above and the leaves that cling to or abandon their perches from it as it lees to the right.

Perhaps the poses we find the spirits in are bracing themselves against this implied wind.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-40516787058463261592011-03-07T13:43:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:50:44.424-07:00Frame 14

Full force coordination in a line of spirits parading into frame. There's a glow emanating from them or the mist they time themselves through as is evidenced by the flecks of highlight on the gravestones in the foreground.

Superb results again of the watercolor so pliably able to suggest to the viewer what might or might not be and to invite them to again involve themselves with their own conclusions. How effective that bright spot diffusing itself off the kneecaps and shins of those in mid-frame ... and even glancing to further cascade down the row.

Easily missed is the neck and the scroll of the violin in the bottom right corner. This might suggest we are looking upon the chorus from the fiddler's point of view. Indeed, the hands-up gesture might not only be a motion within the regalia of the movement but also a greeting to the host of the event?

Hoopes suggests soul within his spirits with pinpoints of light in their sockets throughout as is demonstrated by the spirit to the far right. This guest has direction and intent in his glance down the line. Does it recognize something?

Whereas when these pinpoints are missing (as is the case in the rest of the chorus in this frame), we accredit it to either the shrouds of atmosphere blocking the view or perhaps the neglected spirits are still in a state of emerging while their bodies continue to marionette sustained only by the strings of music.

A pyramidal silhouette in the background suggests enough of the shape of the clock tower as already established. The lines of mist also in the background suggest rolling hills beyond the festivities and that tower. Gloriously dark, wind-swept rolling hills. What goes on there?Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-91956126801717466422011-03-04T16:11:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:51:54.014-07:00Frame 13

As the music employs it, so does the illustrator - bones are found to represent the ponking on a xylophone.

The coordinated formal lines of dancers continue in their stepping in the mist in the background. A squint finds that rows are suggested beyond the first.

And time has relieved itself of its housing momentarily to keep pace with our xylophonist. Not only in shape but in definition. Present enough to remind but not enforce. The stars join the clock. It's branches and time and spirit and stone and stars now.

It is still midnight. How long til dawn? Does time stop for 6 hours in the journey tonight to only jump ahead to 6 hours later in a forthcoming frame?Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-44747445423737064212011-03-03T11:35:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:52:05.980-07:00Frame 12

Shifting in out of detail as they stretch away from the viewer, the souls begin the ritual of the dance in a coordinated chorus line. Eyes glow in the back where they don't in the front or indeed are present at all as what each spirit is becoming unto itself varies from form to form.

And the ground positivly pours forth an eery glow of resurrection and reincarnation. The brightest evidence of the effect throughout the presentation. So bright even as to light up the faces of the headstones in the rear to cast a shadow behind one.

Yet not consistently. Others in the rear are black as pitch. The variance in technique only continues to serve the uncertainty of what is happening and gaining a vantage point to allow this celebration possibly become real.

It's not so much what we're seeing - its the impression of it. The idea of it. The dream of it. We may be sleeping.

And again with the blessing of the clock tower horizon under huge stars.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-25248734025483620442011-03-02T06:36:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:52:25.464-07:00Frame 11

The first broadening sweep of the melody in full base toy soldiers the awakening souls to pied piper behind our host. They are following at this point while the coffee kicks in. There is now more than one.

Viewpoint is low. It is suggested by touches and dabs of white that the line of spirits bends back towards the center of the composition as it oscillates into the distance ...

... to again find the tree and the blessing and orientation of the clock tower there. We are moving outward into the graveyard or perhaps it is moving into us now as the watercolor continues its haze and shifting of all that was before.

Many of Hoopes' compositions throughout are punctuated with "Oh. And a tree." There's a simplicity of a mind that's young at heart in this. Houses have chimneys. Graveyards have leaveless trees.

Depth again so easily represented by the wash over the gravestone in the foreground left.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-89611698742614088692011-03-01T06:27:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:52:35.591-07:00Frame 10

Shocking in its abrupt presentation, the fiddler's face is revealed.

One to avoid when younger.

This thing playing the music not only has a grin and sockets but a spirit with intent within them as is alarmingly revealed by fiery red orbs. This retouch does not do the color justice.

The wind begins to blow and the bow continues its draw. There are details, but only where needed in the finger bones as they pluck at the neck to accompany.

We now know it's skeletel. It has focused into form and has depth and detail. A single socket on the face seems safe enough for now. The right hand is loose as the opening measures continue to build momentum.

Color beginning to saturate in the background enlivens the grounds.
The first spirit rises to the fiddler's beckoning melody.

Enveloped, too, by the watercolor blur of a dream we do see structure within the form - not detailed but enough for us to complete in our mind's eye the motion and grace of a lazy stretch from beyond the grave.

This isn't a corpse, rotting and wormed; but a reanimated representation of the base of what remains.

A projection, perhaps.

The mist's edge is sharper near the now-ink-black sky. Fading and clearing, shifting and lingering about our figure, the branches of the bent branches to the right ...

... and always the graves.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-85054410246528662172011-02-25T07:14:00.000-08:002011-09-06T17:00:48.884-07:00Frame 7

The glowing, shrouded spectre of the fiddler appears and begins to play while the cyclopean monolith of time looks on. The clock face gives us a geography to become oriented to. Later it will become just a reference to what once was as the reality of the yard washes away. The steeple line has blurred with the continuing ebbing of mist and perception.

The detail in the fiddle and left hand are strong. The music - the desire or need or destiny to play it - is sharpened and clear in contrast to the portrayal of reality elsewhere in the frame.

The angle is low - the stars still uncommonly fat and bright. Perhaps the tree by the church is the same as the one we saw in the frame prior; perhaps not; as things continue to become foggy and blurred.

The headstones in front of the church are now a warm light contrasting tone - evidence of something in the foreground lighting them, perhaps. This inconsistency in shading - a technique Hoopes uses throughout - works well as it serves the general shifting contrasts of ambience and spirits and histories forthcoming. This method is one of the prevailing reasons why this filmstrip's portrayal of the layered and shifting nature of the events portrayed in Saint-Saëns' composition is often much more effective than other efforts out there.

Likewise the atmosphere ascends up into the sky to be pierced occasionally by bright stars. That it holds color to a suggested edge against the black of the night sky is further pursuasion of a luminescence emanating from the grounds.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-44584919935148387232011-02-24T08:32:00.000-08:002011-09-06T17:01:13.650-07:00Frame 6

The sky gives way to a watercolor mist blanketing in and around the headstones of the dead.

What occurs within? What is about to?

The air is wet, the edges unclear. No horizon betrays the ground; all barriers are softened and become passive. The mind can roam. What dominates now is time and trees and stars.

Here is first evidence of what is so effective about Hoopes' watercolor approach. This atmosphere has motion as it takes it's position amongst and above the stones to wisp and dissipate to and fro along the tracks of the trees and lines of the church to the stars. Depth is complemented with the effective wash in front of the branch's silhouette in the tree to the right, the bolder edge of the gravestone foreground center, and the absence of edge in the headstone to the right.

In this retouch a light source is implied behind the structures represented. Whether of paranormal origin or something so practical as a side entrance stooplight matters not - it saturates the world presented before us with mystery and awed anticipation - and works to build depth behind and to the left of the church.

The structure behind the clock tower in the frame prior is missing from here on out. The silhouette reads better without it. If it was an error, did Hoopes just not have the time or desire to ammend frame 5?

The clock face is much smaller in proportion to the structure than it was in the prior frame. In this retouch it is desaturated to white. What was in the frame before was a focus on time and it's harbinger; the focus moves away from that now to put the herald in context within the midnight mist of of the graves about it. Our geography is now established; we are in a church graveyard.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-81645619312434469182011-02-23T07:26:00.000-08:002011-09-06T17:01:30.411-07:00Frame 5

Midnight established.

It is time. The clock has started.

Where we are isn't clear yet, but the lines of the structure housing the clock suggests a Christian church or chapel. Absence of detail in the structure serves to establish a misting in the atmosphere.

The imagery of the clock face and the clock tower will be utilized in many frames:
What could be a possible blatant error would be evidenced by the structure shown behind the clock tower. This is the only frame which represents whatever it is; perhaps the larger structure of the church building, perhaps a mountain. Whatever it is, the other slides do not represent it.

The proportion of the clock face diameter to the tower varies as well. Not a candidate for error though; time and the geography of the venue will shift as the reality of moment and shape is driven by the tides of emotion to come.

The clock face glows brightly as is represented by the detail of the highlights on the branches in the foreground. Perhaps a yellow or amber is the true color for the face, but still indeterminate until an authentic original surfaces.

Fat stars in a lighter sky. Lighter at this angle perhaps from mist in the air catching the glow spilling from the clock behind.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-24379606156344645432011-02-22T09:49:00.000-08:002011-09-06T17:01:57.173-07:00Frame 4

The wind blows. There's action and motion to come. Although in context of a credit background and with no music this feels more as if it is indeed a still of the action to be implied later in the presentation as the music "moves" through it's measures while this frame is shown.

More hand-drawn lettering. I doubt that that is Harold Dexter Hoopes' notary signature, but any flair that might be found in it is evident in the swirls in the H's and D's of his credit.

I sense that he started big and then ran out of space; the "Hoopes" seems condensed to balance the space on the right with that of the left of his name. Although it might easily be said the same of the "Harold" which also cacades downward to fit beneath the flair of the D.

The credit descriptions in this frame are italic - perhaps a caligraphic standard of the day.

What a visual editor does for a filmstrip remains to be determined. Initial content choices? Filmstrip "beep advance" planning?

While truer colors remain to be verified, the cool grays work well.

Black silhouettes. Always effective spooky, moody elements.

Not much detail in the branching of the tree, which serves the charm of the art. More of the thick or "fat feel" throughout. While knowledge of skeletal anatomy is pretty evident, not much detail of it is spent toward representing the trees, dead leaves or tombstones. Leads to wondering how large were the original pieces of artwork.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-44596986402118380782011-02-21T14:13:00.000-08:002011-09-06T17:02:12.347-07:00Frame 3

Love that the lettering is drawn - presumably by the illustrator.

Bones to make letters is an easy choice perhaps, but also naively bold. Charming. The largess of this decision is cousin to the fat stars we'll be seeing later.

The first A could be a wishbone.

There's attention to craft shown in that in order to create the deeper curves found in the S or C, 2 bones are used; ribs perhaps - although this isn't consistent in the D execution. The serifs of the M could be the balls of the ball and socket joint at the top of a femur.

As the fiddler and his instrument drive the entire composition it's a fitting choice to have both on the title frame. Although why not the opening frame (5)? Indeed, there's a balance in the composition of the fiddler that would suggest that the layout of the painting was driven for use as this title frame - and not just in the presentation.

As to color, this retouch merely reduced the saturation of any cyan or magenta inherent in the recording of video and unavoidably affected other colors that were present in all the frames. There's still a slight cyan tinge on "Danse" that needs to be addressed. It was assumed the letters on this frame were white as a gauge when balancing the colors throughout. I'm sensing the fog in the background is a richer blue, but any guess is just that at this point.Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-38210918576808157072011-02-21T10:02:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:54:02.325-07:00The Missing Frames 1 and 2The first three frames of MuseumPieces' posting of 10/31/10 are:
And what number would the title and credit slide have if they were numbered? Where do they specifically come in the presentation's "order"?

Two explanations I can think of would be:

1) The 2 frames are missing between the credit frame and the CU of the face of the clock and were somehow deleted or not shown when MuseumPieces recorded his presentation. That is:

Title - Credit - Missing 1 - Missing 2 - Face of the Clock

Some evidence toward this is that there is no blurring of a frame advance when the frame is advanced from the credit frame to the frame showing the face of the clock. (Neither is there blurring of a frame advance between the title frame and the credit frame for that matter ... )

If so, these frames might contain more credit information or missing illustrations of the graveyard (or indeed any number of things) prior to the clock's closeup for the first stroke of twelve.

2) Or that the 2 frames are missing at the beginning of the presentation prior to the title frame and contained information perhaps on the music appreciation series that the filmstrip was apparently a part of as well as perhaps a logo of the producer or distributor of the strip and copyright information (or indeed, again, any number of things). That is:

Missing 1 - Missing 2 - Title - Credit - Face of the Clock

I lean towards the latter. Can't see why the operator would skip any frames while recording the presentation initially on VHS and I myself don't recall any frames that occurred before the clockface in my memory of when I first saw it. Perhaps when the presentation was recorded on VHS the operator saw no need to show the first two "non-content" frames.
All speculation, regardless.

Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-22695297596071436602011-02-21T05:51:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:54:24.288-07:00Retouch MP01GF01

This retouch was intended only to reduce the cyan and magenta hues that dominated the video capture of a presentation of the filmstrip that MuseumPieces posted on YouTube 10/31/10.

No image repair was performed as the low resolution of the material didn't justify the time it would take. The scratches on frames 31-34 can be considered a bit of nostalgia toward the nature of the medium for now.

As no actual version of the filmstrip was available for reference, no serious attempt was made to shift the hue and saturation of the colors until they "looked right." I did, however, bump up vibrance and contrast and added in some warmth throughout to compensate for any lost with the cyan and magenta operation. I made the assumption that the lettering in frame 3 (sampled in this post) was white and used that as my gauge for balancing.

Steps I took on the retouch are briefed as follows.

As I recall it we watched it once all the way through, then were asked to act out what was shown on the screen on several subsequent listenings. I don't recall it beeping to signal the frame advance. I do remember getting the chance to play the fiddler part on one of the rounds - and actually going through the motions of getting up and out of a grave and hiking a leg up onto a nearby chair as I mimed my fiddle as the piece played through and the other kids did their swirling and twirling thing about the room. I got involved in the school plays around this time; playing the fiddler may very well have been my first role.

Without a doubt, beyond the music itself, though, what made the thing linger was that front-on illustration of the face of the fiddler himself. This ghastly glowing orbed spectre from beyond which suddenly had personality and intent and which had been, swear to god, just a moment before, a harmless splotch of gray fuzz with a stringed something or other unequivocally terrified us right out of our own little Charlie Brown skulls.

This current retouch doesn't do the glowing red eyes justice,

It was one of those things where you couldn't bear looking at it because it freaked you out so much. Seriously. You would have to make a devoted, concerted effort to stare at the thing. And talk yourself into it. And get set when you knew it was coming up maybe in the next frame. And you knew that it occurred twice, too, so you'd have to stay on the guard for the second one after you somehow miraculously survived the first.
Fiddlerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12865064824662079857noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1568609025490989615.post-53746810454057722722011-02-20T05:54:00.000-08:002011-09-06T16:54:56.829-07:00Part of a SeriesWhat of the origins and motivations to create the filmstrip in the first place?
